Bulletin Greeting: May 24, 2026

Fr. Scott Morgan reflects on synods, the upcoming Archdiocesan Synod 2027 called by Archbishop Casey, and our call to participate as missionary disciples this Pentecost.

Throughout these past few years, we have increasingly heard about synods and the emphasis on being a “synodal Church.” Discussions of new life, growth, missionary discipleship, and the like can often bring with them a sense of excitement as we dream of a future filled with vibrant, thriving churches — all of which are good things. While we can and should be excited about the future, it does beg the question: “What does all of this mean?”

In its simplest definition, a synod is an extended conversation. Usually taking place over a period of time, a synod unfolds in multiple phases or rounds of localized conversations, often called “conversations in the Spirit” or “listening sessions,” which culminate in a larger gathering known as a general assembly. These listening sessions are intended to help the Church gather together and, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, identify the needs of the Church in a particular place and discern where the Lord may be calling us. The general assembly then gathers to discuss these findings and help chart a path forward.

In the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, our last synod was held in 1971. At that time, the archdiocese discerned the priorities and pastoral needs of the Church in the wake of the Second Vatican Council, which prompted changes in governance, stewardship, and many other areas of parish life. Fifty-five years have passed since our last synod, and much has changed during that time. For this reason, Archbishop Casey has called for an Archdiocesan Synod to take place in 2027.

We are still in the beginning stages of this process, but throughout the next several months we will be invited to participate in surveys and listening sessions to help guide it. I encourage you to take full advantage of these opportunities, as they will give voice to your lived experience of the Church in our communities.

The goal of Synod 2027 is to assist Archbishop Casey in forming a pastoral plan for the Archdiocese that is guided by the Holy Spirit through prayerful discernment with the faithful. Our prayer and participation in the synod connect us more deeply to the larger Church and help us engage more fully as missionary disciples — those called and sent forth to proclaim the Good News to all the world.

As we celebrate the Feast of Pentecost this weekend, let us ask the Holy Spirit to once again enkindle within us the fire of His love: to lead us, guide us, and help us know the path the Lord has prepared for us. Come, Holy Spirit, come!
